J’aime ces échéances que nous propose le calendrier, comme les anniversaires ou la nouvelle année. Il est bien difficile de définir le temps. Nous avons créé des instruments de mesure pour nous situer. Ils nous permettent surtout de nous retrouver à nos rendez-vous. Ces années, ces mois, ces jours, ces heures nous donnent l’illusion de maîtriser ce qui défile inexorablement. Maîtrise que nos agendas bien fournis et raturés contredisent pourtant.

Le temps avec les années qui passent nous permet de nous repérer dans l’histoire de notre monde. L’univers serait apparu il y a un peu plus de 14 milliards d’années… Dans notre histoire personnelle, le temps permet de délimiter des périodes, avec des dominantes : enfance, jeunesse, formation, vie active, retraite. Mais nous savons aussi que la représentation que nous nous faisons de notre passé évolue avec l’âge. Cette évolution aurait-elle un sens ?

Le temps nous permet surtout « d’être avec » ceux qui partagent nos moments de vie. Dire à quelqu’un « je n’ai pas le temps » est une manière de refuser de partager un de ces moments. Tout projet, toute opération complexe se gère dans sa composante temporelle. En industrie, quand on parle d’une opération en « temps masqué », on signifie, fort justement, que celle-ci ne retarde pas la chaîne de production. Il y a donc un temps pour « être avec » et un temps pour « faire ».

Le temps, à l’inverse de l’espace, est discret. Rien ne permet de le saisir, sauf par l’intermédiaire des astres ou de nos montres. On ne peut pas marcher dessus, on ne peut pas se baigner dedans. L’espace est le lieu de nos actions ; le temps, le moment de nos relations.

Toute échéance, comme la nouvelle année nous y invite, nous remet devant la priorité de notre vie. Je dis bien « priorité » et non « exclusivité » ; il s’agit d’une question d’ordre. Quelle fut ma priorité pendant cette année 2015 qui se termine ? Et que sera-t-elle en 2016 ? Aller vers les autres, être attentif à ce qu’ils vivent et à ce qui se vit près de moi ? Ou bien, chercher d’abord à faire des choses, faire avancer les solutions ?

Plus que jamais, la priorité est au relationnel. De 2015, je retiendrai comme événements marquants pour notre humanité, la sortie de Laudato si’ le 18 juin, le pape se déchaussant pour rentrer dans la mosquée de Bangui le 30 novembre, la COP21 et son accord historique du 12 décembre, l’accord unanime des cinq représentants permanents de l’ONU, le 18 décembre, pour ouvrir des négociations de paix en Syrie (250.000 morts, des millions d’exilés). Tous ces événements ont mis la priorité sur « l’être ensemble » planétaire malgré les obstacles. Et si les attentats en France de janvier et novembre vont rester dans les mémoires, j’en retiens surtout les formidables mouvements de solidarité nationale ou personnelle, qui les ont accompagnés.

Que 2016 soit pour chacun d’entre nous, l’occasion « d’être avec » notre monde et nos proches. L’occasion de prendre le temps de parler, d’aimer, de compatir. Pour agir ensuite, avec justice et justesse.
