La patience est une vertu que j’apprécie. Elle favorise la réciprocité de l’accueil. Elle encourage la douceur. Elle nous permet d’intégrer avec intelligence le temps nécessaire à nos projets et à leur réalisation. Une prière résume bien l’originalité de la patience : « Mon Dieu, donnez-moi la force de changer ce qui n’est pas supportable, la patience de supporter ce qui ne peut être changé, et la sagesse pour savoir distinguer entre les deux. » La patience n’est pas résignation et encore moins soumission, car pour être patient, il faut être libre.

La sérénité est une attitude. Est serein celui qui accepte le présent sans trop s’attarder sur son passé, et sans crainte pour son avenir. Soit parce ses affaires sont en ordre, soit parce que son avenir matériel est assuré ; soit, surtout, parce que sa sagesse exprime une totale confiance en la vie. La sérénité exprime une force intérieure qui anime les choix et les renoncements. Elle n’est pas donnée d’un coup de baguette magique. Elle se conquiert. À petits pas. Comme un sommet.

Il existe pourtant un lien entre patience et sérénité. On pourrait penser qu’une attitude comme la sérénité, résulte d’une vertu comme la patience. Pourtant, tous les patients ne deviennent pas nécessairement sereins.

Plutôt qu’un résultat, je vois un prolongement, un aboutissement. Les adeptes de la patience sont nécessairement confrontés, ne serait-ce qu’au moment de leur vieillesse dépendante, aux limites de la patience. Leur problème n’est plus d’être patients. Ils ont fait le maximum. Ils n’ont plus rien à donner dans ce registre. Que leur reste-t-il alors ? Le choix de devenir serein.

Cette sérénité-là serait une patience à la puissance deux. On passerait ainsi d’un monde linéaire avec son unique dimension, l’échelle du temps, à un monde à deux dimensions, comme nos maisons, nos champs, nos montagnes et nos mers qui dessinent ensemble notre sphère Terre. « L’espace est au lieu ce que l’éternité est au temps » disait Joseph Joubert. La patience nous apprend à voir le monde, les autres ou nous-mêmes sous un certain angle, dans une dynamique animée d’une certaine vitesse ou lenteur. La patience rythme nos échanges. La sérénité est l’aboutissement d’une transformation qui nous fait abandonner nos perspectives de patients pour une présence intérieure à ce qui nous entoure, une présence appelée à devenir communion. La sérénité serait alors comme un rythme intérieur en harmonie avec le rythme de ce qui nous entoure.

Seulement, notre sérénité n’est jamais acquise une fois pour toutes. Et s’il me paraît certain que là où notre sérénité s’exprime, la nécessité d’être patient n’a plus sa raison d’être, il m’apparaît non moins certain que la patience nous reste bien utile quand la sérénité vient à faiblir. Heureux sommes-nous alors de pouvoir compter sur chacune en fonction de notre disponibilité intérieure.
